Refrigerators

For optimum performance and better utilization of energy resources, your refrigerator's temperature should remain between 2 and 5 degrees Celsius and the freezer compartment should be kept at -18 degrees Celsius.

To allow free air circulation around the unit, remove any obvious obstructions. It is also helpful if the refrigerator isn't located near direct sunlight or other heat sources.

The condenser coils at the back of the refrigerator need to be cleaned twice a year using a brush or nozzle attachment of your vacuum cleaner.

Microwave Ovens

Utilizing microwaves is an easy way to use up to 50% less energy than conventional ovens. However, the defrost function of the microwave isn't nearly as efficient as defrosting food in the refrigerator.

Only a qualified service technician should attempt to repair damaged or broken microwaves.

Door seals and hinges should be cleaned regularly.

Lighting

Switching from incandescent to fluorescent bulbs can have a huge impact.

Fluorescent lights can produce 6 times more light at the same cost, while lasting 16 times longer. Two 60 watt bulbs use 15% more energy and give the same amount of light as one 100 watt bulb.

Energy efficiency can be upheld by maintaining dust-free bulbs and fixtures.

Freezers

For improved performance, the temperature of your freezer should be -18 degrees Celsius. Allow 5-7 cm of space around the freezer to aid in air circulation. For an upright model allow 10 cm above it.

It is important to wash the rubber door seal regularly using a mild detergent and replace it if it is damaged. Freezers should be cleaned twice a year and defrosted anytime that there is a 5 mm ice build-up

Electric Ranges

Using the broiler saves energy and does not require preheating. It is unnecessary to always preheat your oven unless you are baking. It is also important to keep in mind that electric ranges are not as efficient as microwave ovens, slow cookers and toaster ovens when it comes to small portions

When cleaning elements make sure that they are cool and that you never scrape them or use water. Clean the drip pans under the surface elements regularly

Dishwashers

Dishwashers perform best on a full load. One full load uses 50% less energy as two half loads. Turning the dishwasher off at the end of the rinse cycle to let the dishes air-dry conserves energy.

Clean door seal, hinges and interior with a light detergent at least once a month.

Clothes Washer

You can save on hot water consumption by using warm or cold water whenever possible and always washing full loads.

Clean the lint filter after each use.

Clothes Dryer

Use dryer settings accordingly. Over-drying clothes wastes energy and is bad for the clothes as well. To avoid lint and moisture problems, the dryer can be vented outside.

After each use be sure to clean the lint filter. Due to the fact that lint is highly flammable, it is a good idea to vacuum the area surrounding the clothes dryer every six months
